Art Therapy at the Burkett Center

Posted on April 27, 2016

In 2010, I served as the Art Therapist at the Burkett Center for about 3 years during their seasonal annual programming. The kids were precious and our work together involved developing interpersonal skills, relaxation techniques, and increasing their quality of life through sensory stimulus and hand over hand techniques. This video captures aspects of the programming. I hope you enjoy the video produced by VSA Alabama, the former state-wide organization on arts and disabilities serving both children and adults with disabilities and chronic illness through the arts (www.vsaalabama.org).

Mindful: These birds have much to sing about

Thankful: These birds have much to sing about

The clouds over Birmingham have been raining nearly each day since Christmas! I’m over the moody skies, drizzles on my windshield, the pile of umbrellas stacking up in my car and … my hair frizzies!

After a week of rainy days in the upper 60s, last week, Birmingham was graced with a blanket of 1″-3″ of snow! Then, oddly enough, today I was back in shorts and a t-shirt when I took my dog for a walk this morning. With the sun shinning bright today, I actually became more aware of the blessings that currently surround my life and a spirit of thankfulness ensued! (Yes, my emotions are affected by the weather; it’s amazing what a little bit of sun can do for my soul!!)

Last year, I gave myself the challenge of  10 Friday Thanks. Each Friday, I wrote down 10 things that I was thankful for from the week I had just experienced. I think I’m going to start doing this again; it is never a bad thing to be mindful of blessings.

Meanwhile, enjoy this painting I did for a couple who recently married. These birds have much to sing about; do you?! I’d love to know what you are thankful for today!

Merry Christmas

Light of lights! All gloom dispelling, Thou didst come to make they dwelling Here within our world of sight. Lord, in pity and in power, Thou didst in our darkest hour Rend the clouds and show thy light. Praise to thee in earth and heaven Now and evermore be given, Christ, who art our sun and shield. Lord, for us thy life thou gavest, Those who trust in thee thou savest, All thy mercy stands revealed.   -St. Thomas Aquinas, 13th Century During this time of year, I find Christmas lights irresistible.  Darkness changes when bare tree limbs and trunks become twinkling nighttime sculptures. I hope to always marvel when I view a display of lights in a yard or the annual simplicity of lights on a Christmas tree. There is value in light…

Beach Bound

Beach Bound

A special “unveiling” of artwork was dedicated to Express Oil Change for its annual support of pediatric cancer patients treated at the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama on Nov. 13. The artwork was commissioned by Children’s and created by several children – Zaria Jones, Quintez Gilbert, Nelly Vasquez, Harlen Vasquez and Landon Unger (pictured) – under the supervision of Sarah Margaret Wade of VSA Arts Alabama and will be on display in the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children expansion. Wade says the concept for this acrylic-on-canvas piece depicts children being active, enjoying time with family, enjoying the beach, building and playing. Each year the 35 Express Oil Change & Service Center® locations throughout Central Alabama donate $1 from each oil change, maintenance, repair service or purchase to the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s, the state’s single largest provider of specialized pediatric services for all forms of cancer, leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumors, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders and sickle cell diseases.

Open House Follow Up

Posted on December 8, 2012

I’ve stayed fairly busy these past few months! But before I write about what I’ve been up to, I want to first say a BIG THANKS to ALL who came and supported the open house a few weeks back. I’ve never felt so encouraged and rode on a high of feeling so loved for at least a week–just couldn’t stop smiling. The art cabinet is pretty happy too- FULL of wonderful art supplies that you all donated. Many thanks! Here are a few snapshots of the new studio space: Image
